Special effects
One of the main questions that people ask is if I am having any side effects from taking the medication. Personally the only immediate effect that I am experiencing is weight loss, though common comments mention diarrhoea and 'sulphur burps'. Mounjaro gives you the opportunity to lose weight but during this time you should be developing a better relationship with food, making more suitable and healthful choices so that when you achieve your target weight you are equipped to better manage hunger and your daily diet.
Having a sensible diet will reduce the likelihood and severity of side effects, so I start off my day with overnight oats - oats soaked overnight in milk with some greek yoghurt, chia seeds and some kind of fresh fruit. The fibre contained in the oats is good for your digestion and will also help with cholesterol levels, the chia seeds will encourage healthy bacteria in your gut to thrive, the greek yoghurt will give you a protein source making you feel fuller for longer and the fresh fruit a source of vitamins and a bit more fibre to help keep things moving along nicely. A focus on protein will also encourage your body to use fat, but trying to incorporate some kinds of exercise (admittedly not one of my strong points) will help reduce muscle loss. I try to use the local cycle hire scheme to get from A to B instead of using the bus. It's not going to turn me into Bradley Wiggins, but helps raise my heartbeat for a while and will also help with triglycerides and blood pressure. I've also noticed that as my weight loss has progressed, exercise has become much easier - I'm not going to claim that it is something that I now enjoy, but it's not as bad as it used to be!
I have noticed that I have lost some muscle and I must start to do some resistance exercise to combat this. I will openly admit that I find going to the gym tedious and it is not something that I can imagine ever enjoying, though I realise that I must make the effort. Ugh!
